As a supplier to the pharmaceutical industry and laboratories in the field of biotechnology, Reed Electronics AG is subject to particularly high quality demands. The requirements are usually very individual and varied.
The areas of sensor technology and biotechnology are constantly being expanded. The main focus here is on the core products. These core products are devices for connecting and disconnecting thermoplastic tubes used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
Customer requirements often call for special solutions. With a large number of variants and small batch sizes, new and innovative solutions must be developed again and again. Work processes, tools and materials change depending on the task. An assembly workstation must be optimally set up for constantly changing requirements. Long setup times and work paths would bring the workflow to a standstill and increase the throughput time. Every new assembly workstation must meet all the requirements of lean production.
In a lean workshop in Stein am Rhein at Phoenix Mecano Solutions AG, a coherent concept was developed within one day together with employees from the assembly department of Reed Electronics AG. This was not only done on the drawing board, but with the help of cardboard engineering in a specially equipped Lean-Live workshop seminar room. Here, the future assembly workstation could be provisionally set up and tested with special cardboard boxes. Potential weak points immediately became apparent and could be identified and eliminated. During the implementation of the solutions developed in the workshop, an assembly workstation was created. All the necessary tools and materials are placed in the optimal locations around the employee. The immense advantages are: Everything is always at hand and can be reached with a flick of the wrist. The short and largely eliminated work paths now offer maximum efficiency. The SETAGO pick-by-light worker guidance system was also integrated into the new assembly workstation to guarantee absolutely error-free assembly despite the large number of variants and small batch sizes. All aspects of lean production were taken into account and implemented, resulting in increased productivity in the end. SETAGO Pick by Light makes a very large contribution to process reliability.
Not only the Lean Live Workshop in Stein am Rhein inspired employees and decision makers of Reed Electronics AG alike, but also an impressive demonstration of a collaborative robot, in the premises of Reed Electronics AG in Schachen. It is already clear that the two companies will continue to work well together in the future and remain at the forefront of innovation and technology.
